THE FELLOWES® WORKSPACE ZONE
APPROACHTM
The Fellowes Workspace Zone ApproachTM breaks down the main aspects of the workstation into manageable sections called ‘Zones’. Each Zone provides advice and product recommendations on how to work ergonomically to create a healthier and happier workspace.
We spoke with Louise Shipley, Head of European Marketing at Fellowes, about the findings from their latest Whitepaper on workplace ergonomics. The research reveals a silent health crisis impacting millions of employees and costing businesses billions in lost productivity. Louise explains why this issue demands urgent attention and what organisations can do to protect their people and their bottom line.
WHY IS ERGONOMICS SUCH A CRITICAL TOPIC FOR BUSINESSES TODAY? “Ergonomics is no longer a‘nice to have’,it’s essential. Our research shows that 72% of employees suffer back pain linked to poor workstation set-up,and this isn’t just about comfort. It affects productivity, engagement, and even talent retention. In hybrid work environments, where employees split time between home and office, the risks are even greater.”
WHAT DID THE WHITEPAPER REVEAL ABOUT THE SCALE OF THE PROBLEM? “The numbers are stark. On average,UK businesses lose 16 working days per affected employee each year, equating to around £2,000 in lost productivity per person. Beyond the financial impact, there’s a human cost: persistent pain, increased stress, and declining morale.Alarmingly,73% of businesses fail to conduct regular workstation assessments, despite clear legal requirements under the Health and Safety DSE Regulations.
HOW DOES POOR ERGONOMICS AFFECT BUSINESS PERFORMANCE?
“Discomfort leads to disengagement. Employees who work in pain are less productive, more likely to take sick leave, and more likely to leave their jobs. In fact, replacing an employee can cost up to 150% of their salary. Investing in ergonomics isn’t just about compliance, it’s a strategic decision that improves wellbeing, reduces absenteeism, and strengthens company culture.”
WHAT PRACTICAL STEPS SHOULD BUSINESSES TAKE?
“Start with a posture-first approach. Conduct workstation risk assessments, provide ergonomic equipment, such as sit-stand desks, monitor arms, and wrist supports, and invest in education. The Fellowes Healthy Workstation Assessment Tool is a free resource that helps businesses identify risks and implement improvements.Training is also vital; 26% of employees who receive ergonomic equipment don’t receive any guidance on how to use it.”
WHY SHOULD BUSINESSES ACT NOW?
“The cost of inaction is huge both financially and culturally. 89% of employees feel healthier, more motivated, and more productive when given the right ergonomic support.By prioritising ergonomics today, businesses can create safer, happier workplaces and gain a competitive edge.”
