DAs the old saying goes, “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”. We get that this might be a far fetched dream for most but work is a necessary evil so why not make the most of it?
Whoever you are and whatever your role, you are an important cog in the wheel of your workplace. There are positions that will grab the attention like the best performing sales person but would they be successful without every person in their business doing their job well?
Ikigai is a concept that originated in Japan that effectively defines our life’s worth, the reason we get out of bed in the morning. It is the intersection of four simple precepts:
• Do What You Love
• Do What You Are Good At
• Do What The World Needs
• Do What You Can Be Rewarded For
It’s a great principal to follow at work. Excel at what you do, create an impression and you’ll be valued. It is up to every person to create a culture of impact, where you take ownership of your role and take action to affect positive change and success.
It’s easy to feel invisible or undervalued, you shouldn’t judge your significance on kudos but instead grab the initiative to make a positive difference by doing your job to the best of your ability. Once you
recognise your significance, you can be a force for good. People are too quick to complain because they don’t feel appreciated. Instead strive to maximise your potential, set yourself personal goals and reward yourself when you achieve them. Don’t wait for praise from colleagues and management, self praise can be just as rewarding and if you keep on succeeding and doing your job well you will be recognised.
Negativity can be destructive and if you are only doing your job because you are looking for compliments, this will only lead to disappointment. Redefine your everyday by embracing what you do well, you can feel satisfied without the approval of others. However small the accomplishment, take a moment to show yourself some gratitude.
Stay unique and make it count, it is your time to shine.
